Modular and Linear Examination Routes
Pearson Edexcel offers both modular and linear examination routes across many International GCSE, International Advanced Subsidiary and International Advanced Level subjects. Therefore, candidates can select an available pathway appropriate to their qualification and circumstances.
Understanding the Modular Approach
The modular approach divides an eligible qualification into separately assessed units. Therefore, students can prepare for smaller sections of the curriculum before completing each assessment. Moreover, individual units can be taken during different available examination series. Consequently, students can distribute their examination workload instead of completing everything simultaneously.
Modular assessment can make examination preparation more focused. Each unit covers defined curriculum content and has its own assessment. Therefore, students can concentrate revision around the knowledge and skills required for that particular unit. Additionally, examination preparation can be distributed throughout the qualification.
Understanding the Linear Approach
Under the linear International GCSE route, students complete the required examinations within the same examination series. Therefore, assessment occurs after completing the programme of study. If candidates resit a linear qualification, they must retake its required examinations together. Consequently, individual papers cannot simply be carried forward from different series.
